on the kindness of friends

i’m currently on tour promoting sandwichesimade in san francisco, houston, and new york city. outside my speaking engagements and packed interview schedule it’s been lovely catching up with friends and making sandwiches in new and exotic locales.

i had the privilege of staying with my ol’ buddies ol’ pals M & C in san francisco. i’ve known them for ~14 years and they have a lot going on in their married lives at the moment, including a major house renovation that they are performing on their own. like a building-bathrooms-and-tearing-down-walls type of renovation.

needless to say, it seemed like a tough time to host a house guest and they were super kind to let me crash. thanks y’all! also i’m sorry i accidentally dropped a roll of toilet paper into the loo. in my defense, it was precariously placed.

here is how i made a grilled cheese sandwich in a kitchen that M & C will be destroying in the near future.

1. hurl a classy loaf of bread at a mirror. the bread is still good as long as the mirror doesn’t shatter.

2. spy on your neighbors through a peephole in some bread you sliced too thinly.

3. cut two sensibly-sized slices of bread for your sandwich.

4. prepare to make some super buttery toast.

5. melt butter on your pan and toast your bread in it.

6. smear some goat cheese on one side, throw some cheddar on the other. i closed the sandwich before the production crew remembered they needed to take a shot so it looks like the cheddar is moldy when in reality it’s just goat cheese.

7. melt more butter in the pan. grill the sandwich. give it time. text a friend. pick at a scab. wash your hands and read up on kitchen hygiene. flip the sandwich every now and then.
